Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.

A senior official said the vandalism left him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
