Comeback Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Over Two Years
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hardcourt
A revitalized Medvedev claimed his maiden championship for 882 days with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition final.
The Russian, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a torrid year, managing just one match at the big events and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.
The player's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in particular - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and ultimately parting ways with long-time mentor Gilles Cervara.
Currently working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has consistently advanced in the past month - climaxing in a closely contested three-set victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
It is his maiden championship following the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt after spring of that year.
Victory also signifies Medvedev has won 21 championships at 21 distinct competitions.
"This marks the first occasion I have attended a event with my children together, so to win a championship is especially meaningful," said world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.
"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I got when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."
The athlete, the past champion, had lost his past six championship matches, featuring in that event in the past months.
Medvedev's counter-punching strategy and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had led some to question if his capacity to play at the elite level was over.
However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to advance forward and play assertively, reinforced by an better serving game.
He recovered from a break down in the initial set against the difficult opponent, securing four of the concluding five points to go ahead.
Both players traded break points in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to create a decider.
The opponent saved four early-game opportunities in a tight final set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to close out the victory.
Fittingly, Medvedev earned the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman incapable to control a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
